SAFLog was started as a subsidiary of SAFreight Limited (SAFreight) in 2000 before changing hands in 2002-3. SAFreight was a Black Economic Empowerment freight and marine industrial company that was formed in 1998 as a result of the efforts of the National Empowerment Trust (NET) of South Africa, with Compagnie Belge d’Affretements N.V. (Cobelfret), Belgium’s largest privately owned freight company at the time, as a major shareholder in SAFreight Limited. Some key SAFreight’s subsidiaries included SAFBuild, a tug and fishing vessel building company which successfully completed five Voith Propulsion tugs for the National Ports Authority for the Durban and Richards Bay harbours, SAFDredge and SAFCable, among others.
